Cheap screen recording software for Mac: every price compared
Mac screen recorders range from free to well over $300 a year, and the pricing models make them hard to compare: one-time licences, yearly plans, per-user plans, credits. We put every popular app on the same footing — cost over one year and over three years — so you can find genuinely cheap screen recording software that still does what you need.

Cheap isn't the same as low cost
The real cost of a screen recording is the price plus your time. A free recorder that leaves you an hour of zooms and cuts per video costs more than a $5-a-month one that does them for you — as soon as your hour is worth more than $5. Before choosing on price, ask how much editing each tool leaves you.
The best cheap options by need
Cheapest for quick clips: CleanShot X ($35 once)
Screenshots, recordings with system audio, GIFs and an editor with smart zooms, for one payment.
Cheapest open source: Cap ($58 lifetime)
The commercial licence for an open-source recorder with a zoom editor. Free if it's just for personal use.
Cheapest fully automatic: ScreenToast ($59/year)
Zooms, cursor smoothing, background, captions and drafted narration done for you. Two things make it cheaper than the sticker price suggests: recording and editing are free, so you only pay once you have something worth exporting, and Pro Monthly is $7, so if you publish in bursts you can pay for just the months you export.
Cheapest pay-once automatic: Screen Charm ($99)
If you'll use it for years and hate subscriptions.
How to pay less for any of them
- Use the free tier to decide. Never buy a recorder before you've made a real video in it.
- Pay monthly when you're bursty. Launch month only? Monthly beats yearly.
- Look for education pricing. Screen Studio offers 40% off for students and educators.
- Check refund policies. ScreenToast and Screen Charm offer 14 days; CleanShot X offers 30.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest paid screen recorder for Mac?
Among popular apps, Cap's Desktop licence ($29 a year or $58 lifetime) and CleanShot X ($35 once) are the cheapest paid options as of 20 October 2026.
Is a one-time licence cheaper than a subscription?
Over three or more years, usually. But check whether updates are included — an app that stops updating can break after a big macOS release, and some one-time licences only include a year of updates.
What's the cheapest screen recorder with auto zoom?
Cap's paid licence is cheapest with a zoom editor. For fully automatic zooms, ScreenToast at $59 a year is about half the price of Screen Studio.
Try ScreenToast free.
