Screen Studio vs ScreenToast: an honest comparison
Screen Studio and ScreenToast do the same core job: you record your Mac screen, and the app turns it into a polished demo with automatic zooms, a smooth cursor and a nice background. They differ on price, on what happens after the zooms, and on where your video goes. This is a fair Screen Studio vs ScreenToast comparison — written by the ScreenToast team, so we've tried hard to say where Screen Studio is the better choice.

The short version
Choose Screen Studio if you want hosted share links, you're on macOS 13, or you value its long track record and large user base.
Choose ScreenToast if you want the same polish for about half the yearly price, a free tier with no time limit, narration drafted for you, or recordings that never leave your Mac.

Recording
Both record a display, a window or an area, with camera, mic and system audio. The difference is the area. ScreenToast lets you lock the selection to a publishing shape while you drag — press 1–6 for Free, 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 4:3. If you're making a TikTok or Reel, you film a 9:16 area of your screen and every pixel is used. Screen Studio, like most recorders, lets you change the aspect ratio in the editor, which crops or reframes a wide recording.
Auto zoom and cursor
This is the heart of both apps, and both are good. ScreenToast's specifics:
- Burst merging: six quick clicks in one corner become one zoom, not six jolts.
- Four zoom types: Auto from clicks, Manual on a spot, Follow that tracks your pointer while you drag, and a Glass Loupe that magnifies just a lens.
- Re-run cleanly: run Auto Polish again and it replaces its own work instead of stacking zooms.
- Cursor smoothed after the take, so it's calm but still lands on the button at the moment you clicked.
Voice, captions and narration
Both apps transcribe your voice, make captions and let you edit by deleting words. ScreenToast does the transcription on your Mac. Its distinctive extra is drafted narration: if you'd rather not talk while recording, it writes a script from what you did on screen, timed to the footage, and reads it in a free macOS voice or an ElevenLabs voice using your own key.
Privacy
ScreenToast never uploads your video; there's no account and no cloud. It also scans the recording for API keys, tokens, email addresses and card numbers and blurs them for you to review. Screen Studio processes locally too, and optionally offers hosted share links — useful if a link is what you need.
Price
Over two years: Screen Studio yearly is $216; ScreenToast yearly is $118. Month to month, it's $29 vs $7. ScreenToast's free tier is also different in kind — no time-limited trial, you can record and edit as much as you like and only pay to export.
Size and speed
ScreenToast is a native Swift app under 10 MB to download. Both apps are native and quick; you'll notice the difference mostly in download size.
Where Screen Studio is the better pick
- You need hosted share links or project sharing.
- You're on macOS 13 and can't upgrade.
- You already own a legacy one-time licence — then it's free for you, and that's hard to beat.
Try both
The fairest test: record the same 30-second flow in both apps and compare the result without touching anything. ScreenToast's free tier lets you do that without paying.
Frequently asked questions
Is ScreenToast cheaper than Screen Studio?
Yes. ScreenToast Pro is $59 a year or $7 a month; Screen Studio is $108 a year or $29 a month (checked 20 October 2026). ScreenToast also lets you record and edit free and only charges when you export.
Can I open Screen Studio projects in ScreenToast?
No. The two apps use different project formats. Keep your finished Screen Studio exports as they are, and start new recordings in ScreenToast.
Which has better auto zoom?
Both place zooms from your clicks automatically and let you edit them. ScreenToast merges bursts of clicks into one move and adds Follow and Glass Loupe zoom types; Screen Studio's zooms are well tuned and widely used. Try the same recording in both — the free tiers and trials make that easy.
Does ScreenToast have share links like Screen Studio?
No. ScreenToast exports files only and never uploads your video. If you need a hosted link, Screen Studio or Tella is the better fit.
