Free Screen Studio alternatives for Mac: what you actually get for $0
Screen Studio doesn't have a free plan, so a lot of people go looking for a free Screen Studio alternative. There are good ones — but "free" always comes with a catch: a personal-use licence, a five-minute limit, or a pile of manual editing. Here's what each free option gives you, and what it doesn't.

What makes Screen Studio worth paying for
To judge a free alternative fairly, be clear about what you're replacing. Screen Studio's value is the editing it does on its own:
- Zooms that follow your clicks, without keyframing.
- A smoothed cursor.
- A background, padding and rounded corners, so the recording looks designed.
- Easy export to the right size for each platform.
A free tool that records but does none of these isn't really an alternative — it's a starting point for an hour in a video editor.
1. Cap (free plan) — the closest free match
Catch: personal use only; share links capped at 5 minutes.
Cap is open source and has a Studio Mode with a full editor: zooms, backgrounds, padding. You place and adjust zooms yourself rather than having them placed for you, but the look is close. For side projects and personal videos, it's the best free answer. For anything commercial, you need the $29/year or $58 lifetime licence.
2. OBS Studio — free with no limits
Catch: no polish at all, and a steep learning curve.
OBS records any screen, window or app, at any length, with no watermark, and can capture Mac system audio with an audio capture source. It does nothing to the footage: no zooms, no cursor smoothing, no background. Great for raw capture and live streaming.
3. The macOS built-in recorder — already on your Mac
Catch: no system audio, no editing beyond a trim.
Press Shift-Command-5 to record the whole screen or a selection, with your microphone. It's perfect for a quick bug report. You'll get a raw .mov with a jumpy cursor and no zoom. (QuickTime Player's "New Screen Recording" is the same recorder.)
4. Loom (free plan) — fast, but limited
Catch: 5-minute recordings, 25 videos, and everything is uploaded.
Loom's free Starter plan is great for a quick message to a teammate. It isn't built for polished demos and has no auto zoom.
5. Open-source auto-zoom projects
A handful of open-source recorders on GitHub now add auto zoom and cursor smoothing. They change fast, so check how recently each one was updated and whether it supports your macOS version before you build a workflow on it.
6. "Free to try" paid apps
Sometimes the best free option is a paid app with a generous free tier. ScreenToast is free to record and edit with no time limit and no sign-in: Auto Polish adds the zooms and smooths the cursor, and you can edit as much as you like. You only pay ($59 a year, or $7 for a month) when you export. If you want to see whether the Screen Studio look is worth paying for, it's a no-risk way to find out.
Free vs paid: an honest summary

| ScreenToast (free tier) | Automatic | Yes | — | Export needs Pro |
Personal project: Cap's free plan.
Raw footage you'll edit elsewhere: OBS.
A business demo: a free tool will cost you hours of editing. A cheap paid one — Cap's licence or ScreenToast — usually pays for itself on the first video.
Plans and limits checked on each vendor's own website on 20 October 2026.
