Screen Studio vs CleanShot X: which one should you buy?
Screen Studio vs CleanShot X is a common question because both are top Mac apps that record your screen. But they're built for different jobs. Choose Screen Studio if…
- Your main output is product demos, launch videos or tutorials people will watch end to end.
- You want the app to do the editing: zooms placed for you, a smooth cursor, backgrounds.
- You'll publish to several platforms and need vertical and square versions.
Choose CleanShot X if…
- You take screenshots all day — scrolling capture, annotation, OCR, hiding desktop icons.
- Your videos are short and functional: a bug report, a 20-second how-to, a GIF for a pull request.
- You'd rather pay once than subscribe.
Recording quality
Both record crisp video up to 4K with mic and system audio. The difference shows up after you hit stop. CleanShot X gives you a clean recording and an editor where you add smart zooms. Screen Studio gives you a finished-looking video straight away, and you adjust it.
Cost over time
Over three years: CleanShot Basic is $35 + $38 of renewals = $73 (or $35 if you skip updates). Screen Studio yearly is $324. If you only need occasional clips, that's a big gap.
If neither quite fits
If you want Screen Studio's automatic polish at a price closer to CleanShot's, there are tools in between:
- ScreenToast — $59 a year, free to record and edit. Automatic zooms and cursor smoothing like Screen Studio, plus drafted narration, on-device captions and automatic secret hiding. Mac-only, under 10 MB, never uploads.
- Cap — open source, with a zoom editor; $58 lifetime for commercial use.
Plenty of people pair CleanShot X for screenshots with a dedicated demo recorder for videos. See our full list of Screen Studio alternatives.
