How to record your screen and webcam at the same time on Mac

A face in the corner makes a tutorial or demo feel human. macOS doesn't have a "screen plus camera" button, but there are two good ways to record your screen and webcam on a Mac: a free trick with QuickTime, and a recorder that keeps the camera on its own track so you can change it later.

Record screen and webcam on Mac: a camera split above the screen recording in ScreenToast

Method 1: the free QuickTime trick

  1. Open QuickTime Player → File → New Movie Recording. Your webcam appears.
  2. Make the window small and drag it into a corner. Choose View → Float on Top so it stays above other windows.
  3. Press Shift-Command-5 and record the whole screen (or an area including the camera window).

The catch: the camera is just a window in your recording. It's a rectangle with window chrome, it's in your way when you click near it, and you can't move, resize or remove it afterwards.

Method 2: a camera on its own track (ScreenToast)

ScreenToast records your camera separately from the screen, which is what makes it editable later.

  1. In the recorder bar, switch on Camera (and Mic), and pick your devices.
  2. Choose Display, Window or Area and record. Stop with ⌘⇧2.
  3. In the editor, open the Camera tool and choose a layout:
    • Bubble — a circle or rounded shape in any of eight spots. It slides to another corner when your cursor heads its way, so it never covers what you're showing.
    • Side by side — you and the screen together.
    • Camera only — for an intro or outro talking to the viewer.
    • Screen only — hide the camera for a section.
  4. Switch layouts part-way through — for example, camera only for the intro, then a bubble for the demo.
  5. Optional: cut out the background behind you, on your Mac, and pick one of twelve colour looks (or your own LUT).

For vertical video, ScreenToast can stack your face above the screen so it's readable on a phone instead of being a thin strip.

Frequently asked questions

Can QuickTime record my screen and webcam together?

Not into a single recording on its own. The workaround is to open a New Movie Recording window and keep it visible while you record the screen. The camera is then burned into the video and can't be moved later.

How do I put my webcam in a circle on a screen recording?

Use a recorder with a camera bubble, such as ScreenToast, Loom or Screen Studio. In ScreenToast the camera can be a circle in any of eight positions and resized after recording.

Can I remove the background behind me?

Yes, in ScreenToast. It can cut you out from the room behind you, on your Mac, with no green screen.
