Mac screen recorders with no watermark, free and paid
Nothing makes a demo look cheaper than someone else's logo in the corner. The good news: plenty of Mac screen recorders have no watermark, including free ones. The bad news: a lot of "free" recorders on the web and in app stores stamp one on until you pay. Here's which are which.

Free and watermark-free, no strings
- macOS Screenshot toolbar (Shift-Command-5) — built in, no watermark, no time limit. Mic only, no system audio.
- QuickTime Player — same recorder, no watermark, with a simple trim.
- OBS Studio — free and open source, no watermark, no time limit, records system audio.
- Cap (free plan) — no watermark on local recordings; personal use only.
Paid recorders that never watermark exports
Every serious paid recorder exports clean video once you've paid. The difference is what you can do before paying:
| App | Before paying | After paying |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenToast | Record and edit free; export needs Pro | No watermark |
| Screen Studio | No free plan | No watermark |
| CleanShot X | Paid app | No watermark |
| ScreenFlow | Trial exports are watermarked | No watermark |
| Camtasia | Starter plan editor watermarks | None from Essentials up |
ScreenToast's approach is deliberate: rather than let you export a watermarked video you can't use, it lets you record and edit everything for free and shows exactly what you'll get in the preview. When you export with Pro, the file is clean.
Watch out for these
- Online "free screen recorders" that run in your browser often add a watermark or limit resolution on the free plan, and upload your video.
- App Store recorders with "Pro" upgrades often watermark until you subscribe. Check the screenshots and reviews.
- Watermark removers — cropping or blurring a watermark out lowers quality and usually breaks the tool's terms. Pay for the tool, or pick a free one that doesn't add one.
Your own watermark
Sometimes you want a mark — your logo, not theirs. In ScreenToast, add a text overlay, or an intro and outro card with your product name and URL. Adding a card never knocks your zooms out of place.
Free and clean: the built-in recorder or OBS. Clean and polished: any paid demo recorder — try ScreenToast free and only pay to export.
